6-Week Moving Home Checklist

Our 6-week moving home checklist aims at reducing the stress of moving home and helping you get organised for a stress-free relocation. We all know that moving home can be a stressful, tiring, and expensive process, which is why we have put together a six-week guide to help you through the process. Planning can not only reduce stress, but you can also save money by finding the best deals, packing supplies, and other moving expenses.

In this moving home checklist, we’ll break down the moving process week by week and weave in some of our expert moving tips and advice, as well as our all-time favourite moving essentials. Let’s make your upcoming home move a breeze, and dare we say fun?!

6 weeks before your move: getting started

Right now, as tempting as it can be to put off those mundane tasks of decluttering and budgeting for your move, it’s vital to get a head start on your big day by working through our moving home checklist.

Declutter and start sorting your belongings

It’s never too soon to start. Consider getting rid of or donating items that you no longer need or want, especially if you are downsizing and won’t be able to have as many belongings in your new home.

If you find yourself not being able to let go of some of your belongings, consider implementing the golden rule of decluttering, the 90-90 rule. Have you used it in the last ninety days? Will you use it in the next ninety days? If you just said no, get rid of it! Again, if your items are in perfectly good condition, consider donating them so that they can help someone else in the future.

Set a moving budget

Another important task to do early in the moving process is to set a moving budget. Moving home can be expensive, so now’s the perfect time to get quotes for moving companies, self storage, packing supplies, and any other expenses you might have. This way, you can set yourself a budget and avoid paying through the roof for last-minute expenses.

Here’s a handy moving budget template online to help you calculate your budget.

Set up utilities

Get in contact with your utility suppliers to let them know you are moving. If you need to cancel your suppliers, give them advance notice to avoid any extra fees, and if you are staying with them, let them know the transfer date for your move.

Book time off and explore your new neighbourhood

If you are staying in your current job, let your manager know in advance that you will need some time off to move home. It can also be a great time to use your annual leave before the move to get to know your new area and have a look around before the big day. Knowing where your local supermarket and tool shops are can be a lifesaver for those moving-day DIY projects or impromptu living room picnics until your furniture arrives.

5 weeks before your move: moving essentials

Now that you have the ball rolling and moving day is edging closer and closer, it’s the perfect time to discuss moving essentials.

Moving Essentials

Put together a list of all the moving essentials you’ll need for the first night in your new home. essential supplies like caffeine, toiletries, and DIY tools like screwdrivers and hammers.

Start packing non-essentials

You can also get ahead and start packing by packing non-essential items. Out-of-season clothes, home decor, and other items that you won’t need until your new home can be packed away ready for the big day.

It could also be the perfect time to utilise self storage for your move. Self storage can not only protect your belongings until you move, but it can also reduce stress and save time on a moving day. Collect items at your own pace, instead of rushing to unpack everything in one day.

4 weeks before your move

It’s officially one month before your move, so things are starting to get serious now. It’s time to start packing most of your belongings and look forward to the next stage of your home move.

Pack your belongings

Once you have collected all of your packing supplies, start packing away your belongings safely and securely. Make sure you label all of your boxes to allow for easy identification when you arrive at your new home. There is nothing worse than the frantic search for the tool kit or the kettle!

Use our in-depth moving home packing checklist to make sure you don’t forget anything.

Coordinate with your moving company

Coordinate with your moving company or van rental company, such as Currie Motors, to schedule your move. This will help you plan your travel and ensure a smooth moving day.

3 weeks before your move

The countdown is on! You should be finishing up all of your packing and giving your home a good clean, ready for its next owner.

Finish packing your belongings.

Make sure you have packed all of your belongings. Check against your moving essentials list that you have packed everything you need for the first night somewhere convenient and easy to access. Make a note of all the items you have in self storage to save any panicking or rummaging through your boxes because you can’t find something.

Clean your home

It’s a good idea to give your home a good clean before you move, ready for its next owner. Packing and moving can create a lot of mess, so whether you clean yourself or organise a professional cleaning service, it’s best to get this done now before you are too busy preparing for your move. If you are planning to clean yourself, check out our guide on how to deep clean your home.

Travel to your new home and get your keys
